Andrews Osborne Academy students volunteer across Lake County

Students from Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby spread out Friday across Lake County and into parts of Cleveland to help area organizations.

Participating in the annual, national Mak Burberry Bags 2014 e A Difference Day is part of the school s culture to lend a hand and help out where possible, said seventh grade science teacher Kaleigh LaRich.

We were a little worried about the weather when we started to see that it was going to turn during the week, she said. We were still able to help, hopefully.

Students helped clean out candle jars to be reused and packed seed bags for education programs at the facility.

They started their visit with a walk outdoors, which the students said they enjoyed despite the cold.

Groups took turns inside and outside to stay warm, and some were able to do a little cleaning.

I liked how we cleaned up around the Arboretum so that way there s not so much trash, and we re giving back to them, said one of the students, Quinn Sippola.

Several other students agreed that they Burberry Bags 2014 felt a sense of teamwork, and Burberry Bags 2014 that they even learned a bit about each other through the project.

I liked how we worked together to do this one thing, said Rajanae Williams.

After spending a few hours at their service sites, students returned to the school to hear from Kristin Warzocha, vice president for external affairs for the Cleveland Foodbank.

She talked to them about the importance of volunteering and how they can get involved. She also shared her own story of how sh Burberry Bags 2014 e was required to volunteer at a nursing home in the eighth grade. She recalled that she wasn t very excited about it in the beginning, but that she realized that she was helping people, and that sparked a career.

Nonprofits wouldn t be able to operate without the help of volunteers. those volunteers donated about 50,000 hours of time and that saved us from having to hire 29 full time staff people, saved us more than $1 million; those are dollars that we didn t have to raise, or we didn t have to spend on salary, so we could put them back into making more food available, she said.

It’s a big dose of loving care for a community with big needs.

It’s also a trend congregants at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7650 N. Paseo del Norte, hope catches on citywide.

So far, St. Andrew’s volunteers have given more than 2,100 hours of community service to Tucson through their first three service worships.

“There is a movement in our city of churches truly wanting to live out their faith in tangible ways,” said St. Andrew’s Rev. Jim Toole. “As we are spiritually renewed, transformed and restored by Christ, then we feel called to be restorative change agents in our community.”

Toole said their goal is to hold four service sessions each year.

“The other hope is that some of our members will discover pas Burberry Bags 2014 sion with a particular organization and then be a regular volunteer,” he said. “There have already been a few folks that now are volunteering on a regular basis with the organization they served on service worship.”

For their first service worship in September, St. Andrew’s had more than 500 people volunteer greater than 70 percent of the congregation and more than 900 volunteer hours were performed.

Volunteer Kevin Oxnam said they wrote 110 letters to deployed troops, made and delivered 200 sack lunches, donated more than 700 food items to elementary students in need, stuffed 242 bags of food and toiletries for the homeless, made 39 blankets for Project Linus, and created 60 activity bags for the Ronald McDonald House.

They also spread eight tons of gravel at another church, filled 10 bags of trash and a pickup truck at a school cleanup, and assembled more than 400 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

The idea to cancel regular services and instead do work began in early 2012, Oxnam said, when St. Andrew’s put together a team to determine a new ministry.

“We interviewed many people and organizations in Tucson to better understand the needs,” he said. “We finalized on a new mission area we call Faith That Works.”

Faith That Works includes three mission priorities: service worship, mobile units and partnering regularly with other churches and organizations.

The church recently purchased a mobile unit to provide showers for homeless people.

St. Andrew’s is also now partnering with other local churches, such as the First Church of God, across the street from Amphitheater Middle School, and the Good News Community Church, 701 W. Glenn St.

Oxnam said they learned about service worship from his son’s church in Cupertino, Calif., where the concept has already been in place five years. “We’re hoping other churches will do it, too.”

RuthAnn Smithrud became the church’s outreach director in January after joining St. Andrew’s in the fall.

Smithrud spent her time Sunday preparing food totes for children.

“We’re the ones that are blessed when we help other people,” said Smithrud, who taught first grade in the Amphitheater School District for 27 years before retiring 18 months ago. “It’s honestly life changing. There’s a lot of struggling families right now, in all walks of life, and I feel we can’t afford to sit in churches anymore.

Andrew Robertson hits double in United comeback to send Kilmarnock out of Scottish Cup

DUNDEE UNITED continued their recent run of fine form to send Kilmarnock spinning out of the fourth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup clash with a 5 2 win at Tannadice.

Andrew Robertson opened the scoring for the Tangerines but goals from Darren Barr and Chris Johnston after the break put the visitors ahead.

Substitute Brian Graham made sure of United’s passage into the next round with a well taken penalty in the 82nd minute after Ryan Gauld had been brought down inside the box by Gabriel Reuben, and Gary Mackay Steven wrapped up the scoring with a blis Burberry Bags 2014 tering 22 yard drive.

Kilmarnock began brightly enough and after 20 minutes Kris Boyd was released by Craig Slater for the visitors’ first chance but he fired just wide of Radoslaw Cierzniak’s near post.

They lived to regret not taking that opportunity as United, looking for a third successive win, surged up the park a few minutes later to take the lead in style.

Robertson took a touch to control Armstrong’s pass before beating Craig Samson in the Kilmarnock goal from 10 yards out.

Armstrong had another chance with almost the last kick of the first half as the hosts attempted to give themselves some breathing space.

On that occasion, Mackay Steven went on one of his trademark runs by bursting into the heart of the Killie penalty area from wide on the right.

After leaving two opposing defenders in his wake, Mackay Steven laid the ball back for Armstrong but rather uncharacteristically he failed to connect properly and the chance went Burberry Bags 2014 begging.

Whatever Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston said to his players at half time had the desired effect as his side powered ahead within four minutes of Burberry Bags 2014 the restart.

Firstly, in the 47th minute, they had Cierzniak to thank for coming off his line and missing completely Craig Slater’s free kick.

Darren Barr could not believe his luck but still he had to show composure as h Burberry Bags 2014 e produced an overhead kick from six yards at the far post to give his side an equaliser which had scarcely looked on the cards going into the interval.

As if that was not enough, the Rugby Park side went one step further by gaining the ascendancy in the 49th minute.

There was no slice of good fortune this time as Johnston picked possession up from deep and had only one thing on his mind as he surged towards goal.

Johnston made the most of the home team backing off before curling a delightful 20 yard effort high into Cierzniak’s top corner.

United had a chance shortly after to get back on level terms only for John Rankin’s shot to be saved by the diving Samson.

Boyd was still posing a threat for Killie by keeping the United defence on their toes but it was the hosts who levelled in the 64th minute.

Nadir Ciftci forced his way into the box and looked up to cross for the on rushing Armstrong who met it perfectly by applying the finishing touch from close range.

Then, with 15 minutes to go, Robertson made it 3 2 with a low shot from Gauld’s through pass which beat Samson at his near post before Graham and Mackay Steven completed the rout.

Burberry Bags 2014 Andrew O’Connor’s Katrina Cros

Andrew O’Connor’s Katrina Cross Bags working

The Rev. Andrew O’Connor has a way with the cloth. The way of charity.

O’Connor, 46, is assistant pastor at Holy Family Church in Castle Hill, the Bronx.

He’s also a designer. Two years ago, O’Connor created the Katrina Cross Bags, canvas containers used to ship supplies to hurricane survivors in Pascagoula and Biloxi, Miss.

Silkscreened with artwork based on biblical passages, the bags, when emptied, could be zippered together to form large Christian crosses.

Fifty green Katrina Cross Bags were zipped together to form the canopy for an outdoor church in Pascagoula, he said.

“I wanted it to be a functional bag, something people could use after it was emptied,” O’Connor said.

As part of what he calls a “cycle of charity,” the Mississippi parishioners filled other Katrina bags with goods that were shipped back here and distributed to the poor in O’Connor’s former parish on the u Burberry Bags 2014 pper West Side.

Now O’Connor has focused his cycle of charity on clothing. He has created and is now trying to find a ma Burberry Bags 2014 rketer for Goods of Conscience, the company for his Social Fabric clothing line.

All of the goods are made with natural dyes, such as indigo and walnut, as well as naturally colored cotton fibers in a complete line of family clothing from men’s and women’s pants and shirts to jackets, skirts, handbags and coats.

“The clothes are designed around the idea of a missionary lifestyle, so they are formal and informal,” he said while showing a rack of his garments.

“They’re clothes that are tough enough to work menial jobs, but have a formality about them as well. Often, clothes can’t do that.”

O’Connor came up with the idea last year while visiting Guatemala on a religious retreat, where he saw native weavers making cloth from locally grown cotton. Some of the cotton was naturally colored green, blue and brown.

“I knew my parish [Holy Trinity on the upper West Side] needed albs [white vestments worn by priests and altar servers during the liturgy], so I bought some cloth from them,” he said.

Burberry Bags 2014 O’Connor returned to the city, designed the albs, and got women from a Harlem parish to sew the garments.

Once they were finished, he had some of the garments sent to the women in Guatemala again following his idea of the cycle of charity.

“I wanted them [Guatemalans] to see that the things that are sent down from America are not just the castoffs but things that helped people understand what they do, and that they were made in New York City,” he said.

Partly because he occasionally rides a Vespa motorbike, many Goods of Conscience items include a secret reflective fiber O’Connor used on another church project.

“This fiber is made with thousands of particles of glass per square inch,” he said. “Only one company in the world makes it.”

Goods of Conscience is headquartered at Holy Family Church on Watson Road. All of the clothing is sewn and dyed in the church basement, mainly by parishioners Maria Rivas, Carmen Alberty and Francisco Portillo.

O’Connor is hopeful the line will provide a permanent income for the Guatemalan weavers and New York parishioners. The new manager was a member of the board, records show.

Burberry Bags 2014 Andrew Johnson’s ordinance wou

Andrew Johnson’s ordinance would ban Styrofoam containers in Mpls

Andrew JohnsonDid you know Minneapolis already has an ordinance on the books banning Styrofoam containers? Before he successfully ran for City Council last year, neither did Andrew Johnson.

“When I was campaigning I would come back late at night and go through city ordinances because when I had worked with the Longfellow Community Council, a lot of small businesses felt there was a lot of red tape,” Johnson tells us. “And so, I was going through these ordinances and I found this one on environmentally sustainable containers, and I thought, does this mean Styrofoam is banned?”

But next week, the first term City Council member from Minneapolis’s most southeastern ward will introduce a new anti Styrofoam ordinance. This time, he expects it to stick.

Johnson has declared war on containers of this sort.

Johnson’s ordinance would ban businesses from giving customers to go Styrofoam containers, and would require all food or beverage containers to either be recyclable or compostable.

Most everyone knows about the environment Burberry Bags 2014 al problems posed by Burberry Bags 2014 Styrofoam. But Johnson says public health concerns also motivate his proposal.

“When there’s food or hot beverages in a Styrofoam container, styrene leeches out of it,” Johnson says. “It’s considered to be a presumable human carcinogen and neurotoxin.”

Johnson also addressed concerns some have expressed about his ordinance, including costs Burberry Bags 2014 to businesses and overregulation.

Regarding costs, Johnson cited the impact of a similar ordinance in San Francisco, which is one of more than 100 American cities that have already banned Styrofoam containers.

“When San Francisco implemented this, more than 3,000 businesses were affected but not a single one filed a financial hardship report,” Johnson says. “Yes, it does cost a little more, but as more businesses switch over it drives down the price as well.”

Johnson got theoretical when asked to address worries his proposal takes us a step further down the road toward a nanny state.

British drug mule Andrea Waldeck was back in an Indonesian court room this morning, as s Burberry Bags 2014 he waits to find out if she will be handed the death penalty for smuggling 1.5kg of crystal meth into the country.

The former PCSO admitted sm Burberry Bags 2014 uggling earlier this month after being caught with the drug hidden inside black bags in her underwear when arrested in her hotel room.

The 43 year old, from Gloucestershire, was followed out of Surabaya airport in April after officers in Indonesia’s second largest city got a tip off she was carrying the drug, known locally as Shabu Shabu.

She claimed her boyfriend, who lives in China, told her to take it to a man in Indonesia in exchange for 3,100, but now faces death by firing squad for the crime.

Appearing in court in Surabaya this morning, she was told that prosecutors are not ready to decide her sentence yet.

Wearing a white shirt, she sat before a bench of judges as they told her she would now be due back in court on December 2.

Waldeck had previously apologised to friends on her Facebook page, saying in message from jail: “Your support means the world to me. I’m so very sorry I’ve disappointed you all.”

This is the British former PCSO who faces death by firing squad for alleged drug smuggling in Indonesia.

Andrea Waldeck, 43, is accused of having more than 3lb of crystal meth hidden inside black bags in her underwear as she was arrested in her hotel room.

The ex police community support officer was followed out of Surabaya airport in April after officers in Indonesia’s second largest city got a tip off she was carrying the drug, known locally as Shabu Shabu.

Her trial in a district court there has now heard how she claimed her boyfriend, who lives in China, told her to take it to a man in Indonesia in exchange for 3,100.

Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest drug regulations and the prosecution said the accused violated the narcotics law, which carries a possible death sen tence. Miss Waldeck joined Burberry Bags 2014 Gloucestershire Police as a traffic warden in 2003 and became a PCSO before quitting last year.

She told friends in a Facebook message from jail just weeks ago: “Your support means the world to me. Burberry Bags 2014 I’m so very sorry I’ve disappointed you all.”

Miss Waldeck is expected to make a statement at her next trial hearing on Monday. A close relative in Brecon Burberry Bags 2014 , Powys, told the Mirror yesterday: “We know of the arrest and what’s happening out there but we just want to be left alone.”

Former neighbours in the village of North Littleton, Worcs, yesterday told how Miss Waldeck bought a converted 14th century barn there while with the police but moved out in 2008.

“She bought it with a girl friend,” said one. “They never seemed to have visitors and we didn’t socialise but she seemed a nice person. I’m shocked to hear she has been arrested in Indonesia.”

A woman now living in the barn said: “It was repossessed at the time and I bought it from the mortgage company.”

Gloucestershire Police said: “We are aware a former staff member has been arrested in Indonesia.” The Foreign Office said: “We are providing consular assistance.”
